HISTORY FORUM UPDATES!(:

FORUM DISCUSSION
Objectives:
- Pupils will examine the concept of change and continuity through the forum discussion.
- Pupils will look at the various perspectives of an issue and form their own views.
- Pupils will be able to express their views through well-thought and crafted explanations, supported with evidence.
Task:
- Topic of contention: Foreign Talent: A bane or a boon?
How do you perceive the immigrants of today?
§ Are they a threat to Singaporeans? Or do they contribute to the growth of Singapore?
§ What is your stand on the issue and explain why you hold that position, citing relevant examples to support your position
Preparation Work:
- In order to put up sound postings, pupils are encouraged to read a variety of articles / blog entries / views on the issue of foreign talents. The following articles will be printed for you:
o Foreign yes, but all talent? (Singapore Magazine, Nov-Dec 2000)
o Why S’pore should welcome foreign talent by Janadas Devan (ST 21 Jan 2006)

Please read through these articles during the holidays and make notes of what their views are. You may also want to research on other articles relevant to this topic.
Forum Discussion:
1) The forum discussion will take place on Term III Week 1 (23 June 2008 and end on 27 June 2008).
2) All pupils are to put up 3 postings to the issue in question, the first being their own view, with the other two being responses to their peers’ postings.
3) Please start a new thread for your posting. A response to a peer’s posting will not be considered as stating your position. (Note: Teachers will use your first posting as the main input for assessment and it must be easy for your teachers to find your posting)
4) Your forum will be uploaded on the elearning portal - _____________________
5) Your postings will be assessed and considered for CA2 marks.
6) Your postings will be assessed on the following:
ú Content with clarity in explanation [5m]
ú Depth of view / New insight [5m]
ú Relevance [5m]
Some Guidelines for Forum Postings:
§ Every pupil must put up at least 3 postings: one that presents their stand clearly and the other 2 postings are their views on their friends’ postings. There is a limit of a maximum of 5 postings to be made. Teachers are at a liberty to choose 3 for assessment.
§ Your first posting has a word limit of 150. Responses to your friends’ postings must be capped at 100 words per posting. You are to take one side of the argument and explain very clearly using PEE. Avoid repetitions of ideas.
§ All postings must be put up in proper English. The postings should be grammatically accurate. Do not make it too conversational, nor should you use too many acronyms or abbreviations. Smileys can be used to show your emotions. Please do not use SMS lingo.
§ Make sure your postings are not mere extracts / lifting from the recommended readings or websites. It is important that you present your own views on the issue. (You will be penalized for plagiarism if you use others’ ideas as your own.)
§ You should ensure that your entries are not inappropriate, bearing in mind that there are many “immigrants” (classmates who are not from Singapore) in our midst. Marks will be deducted from you if you put up insensitive comments.
§ The last day for this exercise will be on 27 June at 2230h. Please make sure that you have contributed at least 3 entries.
