Hi Dunmanians! (:

I'm Kang Jia Hui and i'm one of the two candidates running for the position of the executive president for student council this year :D

i understand that the whole campaigning process is pretty short with you guys having to cast your votes on monday so i thought i'd email you guys and let you know more about my ideas for the school so that you can give me your feedbacks or suggestions and i can work on it!

i've been up and around the school and have spoken to quite a number of you and here's what i've gathered so far!

1) Canteen is too packed and bursting with students during recesses!
with the senior high students hogging the tables and chairs in the canteen, some of you have difficulties finding seats to have a proper meal during your recesses and end up eating on the floor (YIKES!) or standing at the empty spaces between stores :( and that's not how recesses should be like! So i'd be alerting the school about this problem and work with them to solve it! So far, i've thought of putting in more tables and chairs (since there is much empty spaces btw the tables now, more should be able to be slotted in), encouraging your seniors to study at the study lounges, propose an alternative eating place for junior high students (which should be prefably nearer to the junior high block), allowing dry snacks to be consumed in classrooms (provided we all clean up after ourselves :D) and also having a vending machine which sells snacks in the junior high block (so that you guys do not need to travel to the faraway land of the canteen!)

2) RECESSES ARE SIMPLY TOO SHORT
i am guessing that if i were to ask you guys to describe how recesses are spent, most would say 5mins spent walking to the canteen, 10 mins deciding what to eat and queuing up to buy it, 5 mins to find a spot to squeeze in, 7 mins to gobble up your food and 3 mins to run back to the classroom! and that's not my idea of recess breaks! recesses should be a nice break for all of us to take a mental break and have some food to last us for the rest of the day! and rushing from place to place doesn't sound much of a break! SO! i'll be working closely with the school to see what can be done about this and hopefully we can extend recess to 45mins if possible!

3) ALLOW EARSTICKS! (guys can skip this xD)
some girls have been proposing for earsticks to be allowed because they're easier to wear (and cheaper to replace if lost haha!) and they don't exactly look very flashy/negative, especially the transparent ones! and i agree! (: earsticks do not look any more flashy than identical/symmetrical earings which are allowed so they should be allowed! i'll be speaking to mr teo and proposing to the discipline committee for earsticks to be allowed. i guess as long as we still look proper and studious, there is not many reasons why earsticks should not be allowed :D i'm with you for allowing earsticks!

4) SNEAKERS SHOULD ALSO BE ALLOWED ON NON- PE DAYS
some of you feedback that sneakers should be allowed on non-pe days since you guys dont engage in sports and sneakers are comfortable enough for walking around. hence, i will be voicing this out to the school as well. i believe that as long as the sneakers do not look flashy and we still look like students (positive looking ones of course!), there is not much harm allowing sneakers to be worn on non-pe days! additional to sneakers, i will also propose for canvas shoes which are predominently(majority) white to be allowed as well! so fingers crossed while i push for this code of conduct to be changed! :)

5) MASS WATCHING OF MAJOR EVENTS IN SCHOOL
imagine a whole auditorium of friends standing up and roaring with cheers when a goal is scored! that's the awesome experience i wanna provide for you guys! so i propose mass watching of major events in school such as the FIFA WORLD CUP and the YOUTH OLYMPICS GAMES 2010! and any other exciting events which will be taking place in the years to come! it'd be a unique gathering of Dunmanains wouldn't it! :D (& of course it wouldn't be compulsory as different people have different interests! but i'll make sure there's a wide variety of programmes we can watch so everyone can be excited bout it!)

this is all the suggestions i've gathered so far! so if you have other feedback or ideas to solve/improve the above problems/situations pls do tell me! you can do so by replying to this email (: or simply stopping me in school if you see me (and recognize me xD)

and i really hope that you can vote me for executive president this coming monday! that is because being the Executive President would give me the platform to communicate the ideas to the school and it also puts me in a better position to fight for your wants and push for improvements in school (: and besides! i promise more fun, laughter to your DHS experience! :D

Dear Students,

To mark our return to Tanjong Rhu campus, we will hold a school-wide Homecoming Celebration on 2 Jan 2009. Year 1 to 4 students are to report to the school hall of the Tanjong Rhu campus in school uniform by 7.45am for the celebration.

Although it is still school holiday for our Year 5 and 6 students, they are strongly encouraged to join us in the celebration if they are not overseas, as this is an important and symbolic milestone in the school's history. There will be no formal lesson on that day but students are required to bring along their stationeries for classroom activities.

Please be informed that there are no recess breaks on 2 Jan 2009. Light refreshment will be provided to you at 10.30am. You are therefore strongly advised to take your breakfast before you come to school. You should be dismissed at around 12.15pm. Attached is the programme of the Homecoming Day Celebration for your reference.

If your parent is driving you to school, he/she can either drive you into the school via the Tanjong Rhu Road vehicular entrance or alight you outside the school along the Kampong Arang Road. The Kampong Arang Road vehicular entrance is currently not accessible as some construction works is still going on there but a temporary side gate has been created to allow students to walk in. Please remind your parent that the traffic condition along Tanjong Rhu Road is expected to be heavy during the morning peak hours, and making U-turn along that road is best avoided. Instead of making U-turn, your parent can alight you at the opposite side of the Tanjong Rhu Road for you to cross the road at the traffic light and walk into the school. Please remind your parent to exercise patience and care in driving along these stretches of the road.

We, as a class, have to come up with a homecoming (to Tanjong Rhu -.-) cheer soooo we have to compose a simple, easy-to-learn cheer of less than 1 min with a theme of homecoming, and it must have BOTH English and Chinese (woohoo..) + think of props like pompoms tin cans with beans and all that and choreographed actions.

POINTS WILL BE AWARDED FOR CLASS LEAGUEE YO.

In conjunction with the global STAND UP AGAINST POVERTY event, Dunman High will be holding this event for the very first time!

Stand Up and Take Action Against Poverty and For The Millennium Development Goals is a global event which takes place on 17 October to remind world leaders to honour their commitments to end poverty. In 2007, more than 43 million people from 127 countries “Stood Up” including 4033 here in Singapore. Most of these Singaporeans were youth, including students from RGS, Hwa Chong Institution, Raffles Institution and NUS.

In 2008, ONE percent of the world population is expected to Stand Up. We would like the students, faculty and employees of Dunman High to be part of this ONE percent!

For every person who Stands Up in Singapore, ONE (SINGAPORE)'s corporate members are pledging to support projects linked to the MDGs across Asia, including the distribution of mosquito nets to fight malaria and construction of latrines in
schools to improve sanitation and enable girls to attend classes.

Stand Up is a simple yet meaningful and very importantly, powerful message that global citizens can send. With bigger numbers, a greater sense of unity, compassion and urgency can be really felt.

Hence, as part of this meaningful event, we will be holding some fringe activities where you are encouraged to participate in. We will be holding 3 competitions namely art, poem, and song competition. (Rules and regulations, registration list attached.) We would also display the winners of the contests as well as posters on the Millennium Development Goals on that day.

We would also like to encourage you to buy the $2 white bands as they are the symbol of this event. Date - either on:

15th oct - marking week,
start of sch holidays (3rd nov - Monday)

as it would be off peak and 60% cheaper.
+ Which date is preferred?

aloha chalets as they are cheap.. but good.
chalets will be bigger and better. fully equiped.
We checked around and aloha is considered the cheapest of the resorts.

Biggin Hill Teracces, Changi Chalet L, Garden Terrace
first two is in changi, last in loyang.

either one of the above.
prices: $100, $120, $140 for off-peak respectively.
this applies on a perday basis and haven include gst and charges.
will have to book around 2 days..
and most probably each person will have to pay around $10 if staying over.
would be desirable if around 20 people stayed over.
if not staying over then please pay up too for certain expenses.
this chalet will be more well-organised with better facilities.
with bbq and stuff.
games and stuff will be done in chalet so mostly having fun together. (bonding!!)

Flag raising
Be sure you are in either PE, Class Tee, or School Uniform during flag raising itself. You will be given the next half an hour to change.

8.30 - 9 am
Change into costumes
Report to the Hall by 9 am sharp and be sure to be punctual, thanks.

Afterwards would be the concert followed by the carnival (or smth)
Yup then we will end around 12 - 12.30 pm.

Please try your very best to find costumes for Hairspray but if there really isn't anything 60s for you to wear,
For guys: wear your dad's/uncle's collared shirt, long pants, suit. Anything you think old fashioned actually.
For girls: Hmm quite hard actually. DRESS AS GUY! Ok no, errrrr try to find maybe patterned (polka dot, stripes) blouses and skirts? That is, if you don't have a dress.

Hope to see you all come happy tmr, not like the past few days when everyone was complaining that the theme was sucky. I know it's kind of hard to dress up but just try okay.

As you all know, Monday there's phototaking for class photo, right?
And we're supposed to bring PROPS.
Okay, so i was thinking, we all bring our CLASS TEE. And we can wear the class tee over as 'props' for one of the fun shots or something?
Then we can all look red and striking. :D
Anyone oppose? ><
Oh but we have to make sure everyone brings the class tee luh, even if 1 person forgets then it won't look good already..
It's our last year together, at least we should take a decent class photo that will leave us the memories right? :)

Gemma.
we have asked for opinions in class.
we have held mass convo.
the tagbox is Always open for suggestions.
and you can also drop Natalie a sms / call 24hrs.
through various discussions that were open to all,
the majority of the class have been given ample opportunities to discuss, comment and decide on the movie theme, so the result as a class have been decided to be HAIRSPRAY.
we have to decide by tmr morning so i doubt any change will happen.
i hope that as a class we will support the decision and do our best for our class.

if you feel embarrassed about the theme,
you can change only after reaching school,
or change when school ends, however in school
everyone is wearing various costumes from movies so being supportive is but the right thing to do and this is only LAST few months as a class.
although we may have many disputes i hope that as TWOGEMMA we may be able to strive through the exams, through this year, and celebrate teacher's day with our wonderful teachers who have done their best to help us.

so for the theme,
please dress up in 80's or clothes in the fashion that is similar to the previous pictures shown
you can gel/style your hair in a wacky way or in turn similar to the characters.
glitter/face paint your face if you want, for those adventurous try lipstick.
guys dress smartly and im sure that the girls will fall head over heels.

so jiayou for mugging and just look forward to a FUN teacher's day.
it is a day we appreciate and give thanks to our teachers.

If we use Hairspray for the theme, then we can't dye ur hair (says te overall in-charge of the movie thing)
Means that we can just come in our 70s clothes
But face paint can be used also.
So...any violent objections to hairspray?

we had a class committee meeting with the scs today regarding teachers day
here is whats gonna happen and what we needa do

rmb the theme of this year’s teachers day is MOVE-ES: You Move Our Lives (MOVIES:pun)
so the day we will be celebrating it on would be on the 29th August 2008
the schedule as follows –
0755 – 0810: Flag raising ceremony. (starts at 0755 so better leave class by 0750)
0810 – 0900: Presentation of pre-concert gift
0900 – 1030: concert
1030 – 1200: potluck party

the attire for that day is REALLY INTERESTING and I sincerely hope u would all try to follow.
each class is to choose a movie. Students ARE TO DRESS UP AS MOVIE CHARACTERS in the movie
so tomorrow we choose the movie yeh?

however, some guidelines. no inappropriate attire and footwear such as spaghetti stripes, slippers etc.

potluck part.
it will be held at the gym and grandstand
each class is to bring food enough for everyone inclusive of class teachers

as you all know (well, maybe not all) next Tuesday is the dhs symposium
lessons will end @ 10.45am after which u will go round the sch for the symposium
from 10.45am to 11.30 am will be the science activities for our class
u need to like get into groups of three for this
however, there will be 2 groups of four
the following are presenters that will NOT need to be grouped: mancini, Kristin, sherly, jaslyn
others pls get into groups of three
